Happy Ash Wednessday and start of Lent
Permalink

Well, since people like to celebrate everything on this board (by the way, I wish a belated Chinese New Year to you all. Year of the Pig! Yay!), I figured what the heck, let's throw in all holidays/seasons.

After gorging on beer, Skittles and meat on Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) yesterday, many people need at least 40 days to burn off the 100,000 something calories they consumed (hence the fasting). Today on Ash Wednesday marks the first day of Lent, the countdown to Easter. Even if you are not Catholic/Christian (or just not very observant), free seafood and hot cross buns for everyone!

Does everyone fast for Lent? 'Cause I know some people just give up something that they love doing X3

The rule is that if you are over 14 and not a senior citizen (since it can cause health problems), you have to fast and give up meat on Fridays, at least that's what I was taught. You can also give up something you like to do in addition (which is what younger kids do instead of fasting). Though I really don't know if you can call what we do actual "fasting". It's really just 3 small (I mean small) meals and you cannot have anything inbetween those times except water (so no snacks). I guess if you are used to eating a lot or more times in the day it may be challenging.

I'm glad I'm thirteen then. ._. I can't fast for very long. Soon's I get home, I eat (I skip lunch).

My little sister goes to a Catholic school now, so she's my source of church-related information. Her, or my friend Julie. And that's how I know I can't eat meat on Fridays. :D

And that's why the Italians invented pizza

I could probably fast. I just wouldn't be very happy about it. Well, thank God I don't practice Christianity! (And yet, I still celebrate Christmas... don't you just love commericalization of holidays? [rolls eyes])

Daddy says the Italians sent Marco Polo and he stole pizza base from China and made it into pizza.

Actually it was pasta that Marco Polo got from the Chinese. It was the ancient Greeks who had something like pizza (flat bread with olive oil and cheese), which the ancient Romans then adopted. Several hundred years before Marco Polo.

Daddy doesn't say so. XD

But at least he was right about Marco Polo taking something from China.

Alison forgot that we can't eat meat on Fridays and ate sweet and sour pork.

One of my friends (he's the one that insulted me on his website) gave up candy for Lent, and his mother made him promise to pay $0.50 every time he breaks his resolution. He broke it on the second day of Lent.

I heard somewhere that on Ash Wednesday, Catholics/Christians got an ash cross "smudged" on their forehead. Not quite sure what that means, or even if it's true though. Is it?

My sister came home with ash on her forehead, and she kept itching to take it off, but we wouldn't let her. XP

Aw, man. I ate meat this morning. Does it count if you ate meat on a Friday before the sun's up?

Yes, they are the ashes of burned palms from Palm Sunday of last year. The ashes are destributed by the priests in the shape of a cross on the forehead. You aren't supposed to wash them off for the rest of the day, if I remember correctly.

Yes Cali-Bunny is right. I did break my lent resolution but only once and it was on the FIRST day of lent not the second. There is a cross that is placed on your head but most of everybodys was "smuged." You are NOT supposed to eat meat on Fridays during lent (till easter) and also on Ash Wednesday.
