Jetsir: Hey guys, long time no see! ^^ Jetsir here with another fanfic. This time it’s –gasp!- multichaptered! So yeah, Rip Runner’s a cool character and I thought he needed a little more lovin’. So this fanfic is all about him, along with a few OC’s of mine (I hope y’all don’t get too mad about that) and the Loonatics are going to be minor, yet somewhat major characters in this (if that made any sense at all). So sit back, relax, and enjoy my fic, Living In The Shadow!

Disclaimer: I don’t own anything in this thing except for the plot, my oc’s, and the computer I wrote this thing on.

Cue fic.

Living In The Shadow

Chapter 1

Rip Runner walked through Acmetropolis High School head hung low, shoulders slumped, and hands shoved deep into his pockets. He grit his teeth together as he felt the stares and heard the comments of his classmates.

“Isn’t that Rev Runner’s kid brother?”

“Ooh! Rev’s soooooo dreamy!”

“I heard that guy tried to destroy Acmetropolis!”

“No way! Really!?”

“Yeah, it was all over the news.”

“Who would’ve thought that he’d be a bad guy! Why couldn’t he be a hero like his brother?”

Rip stopped and glared at the students around him. They all slowly turned away, some standing there awkwardly, while others pretended to search through their lockers. Rip continued to walk to class.

“Man, he’s scary! He’s nothing like his brother!”

That’s because I’m not my brother!’ thought Rip angrily.

The weeks following the incident in which Rip was possessed by alien technology had been nothing but pure agony. Classmates avoided him like the plague, some of his former friends wouldn’t even talk to him anymore, and the worst part was, his parents still didn’t fully trust him.

There were only a few people left in his life that he could lean on.

“Don’t worry, Rip, it’ll be all right.”

She was one of them.

He stopped to look at the owner of the voice, who had kept walking, but backpedaled when she noticed he wasn’t walking with her. Her name was Melinda Mallard, she was a spunky young duck with yellow feathers and short red hair that got in her green eyes when not held back by hair clips.

She had been Rip’s friend since 5th grade, and their friendship remained strong all the way up to their sophomore year in high school and would probably remain friends for many years to come. Melinda had always been there for Rip, and to this day, she had been the only one to see him cry.

Rip admired her for her fiery attitude, though she did tend to get on his nerves from time to time. She complimented his laid-back, apathetic personality with her energetic, sarcastic, and caring one. She was yin to his yang, total opposites, yet one and the same. Most importantly, they both shared the same taste in music.

Melinda waved a hand in front of his face, then snapped her fingers, “Riiiiip!” she then whistled to get his attention, “wake up! Rip, you’re staring!” She smirked, arching an eyebrow.

“Huh? Oh, sorry,” Rip said sheepishly, then began walking to class again.

Melinda began to walk with him, for they both shared the same class, “are you going to angst about this forever? ‘Cuz, seriously, this is getting old,” though to anyone else it would’ve been offensive, Rip knew Melinda was truly concerned. She just had her own way of showing it.

“Everybody’s talking about me, my parents don’t trust me, and I’m still nothing like my brother! And I am not angsting!” said Rip irritably.

“You know by next week whatever happened is gonna be old news. Your parents are just still a little mad and shaken from what happened, they’ll get over it eventually. Personally, I’m glad you’re not like your brother because then you wouldn’t be you! Now come on, stop this, I miss the old Rip. It’s no fun picking on you when you act like this,” Melinda reasoned as she linked her arm around his and leaned heavily against his shoulder.

Rip couldn’t help but crack the slightest of a smile. Melinda was right, again, and it did make him feel better, though he still felt bad, just not as bad.

The smile didn’t go unnoticed by Melinda, ”Oh? What’s this?” she gasped dramatically, “is that a smile I see?!” The duck leaned forward, standing on her tiptoes to try and close the height difference between the two, getting in the roadrunner’s face. They were so close their beaks were nearly touching.

Rip blushed slightly then covered it up with an annoyed scowl, “does personal space mean anything to you?” he asked as he placed his index finger on her forehead and pushed her face away from him.

“Nope, not at all,” Melinda smirked, then checked her watch, “C’mon we’d better get to class, the bell’s about to ring.” She then grabbed him by the arm and dragged him towards class.

Rip’s beak curved upward in what almost was a smile, the second most important thing about Melinda was that she always knew how to make him smile.

End Chapter 1

Jetsir: Well, I hope you liked the first chapter of my fic. I enjoyed writing it. Yeah, I just used this chapter to explain Rip’s situation and to introduce one of my OC’s, Melinda Mallard. I like her, and you’ll be seeing more of her. I also took the easy way out and made the two of them already know each other. Meh, oh well, I still hope you like it.

Remember: I shall back wonderful snicker-doodles with your sugary sweet comments, and roast marshmallows on your flames. Either way I still get a mighty tasty snack.

Great start! Way better than me! Funny, though, I've tried reading fics about Rip, but so far, this is the first that has actually interested me. And I'm pretty picky when it comes to what fanfics I read.

Keep going! I can't wait to read the next chapter!

Anyways, this is a terrific start to a story. I so know why you named your story that. I like the description and the dialogue. It's all natural. I hope to see the next chapter soon cos I am looking out for this.

Chapter 2

Science is always so boring,’ thought Rip as he idly took notes while pretending to listen to the teacher in his fourth period class. He sighed, he already knew most of what the teacher was talking about, science was one of his best subjects and he could easily say he was the smartest in his class. He was glad that it was the last period of the day and that it was almost over. Rip put his elbow on his desk then propped his head up in his hand. His eyelids slowly began to shut.

He then felt himself nudged and he fully opened his eyes to see a piece of imitation paper (by 2750, trees had become endangered and plastic had replaced wood for making paper and other former wood products) being slid in front of him. It was folded up and said “To Rip” on it. He immediately recognized it as Melinda’s handwriting. He looked to his right and glanced at Melinda, who was in the seat next to his. She gave him a sideways glance and smiled.

Turning back to the piece of paper, he unfolded it. “Hey, Rip. What’s up?” was written on it.

He wrote back: “Nothing much, just bored. What about you?” he slid it back.

I’m bored, too. Hey, are we still on for tonight?

Yes.”

Good, I can’t wait.”

Rip smiled, he was looking forward to that night as well. It was the day that he and his band, The Runner-Ups, got together to practice.

The Runner-Ups was a band he and his friends started in 8th grade. He didn’t like the title of the band, but everyone else had insisted it, so of course, majority rules. Darn it. Rip was the front man and on lead guitar, while Melinda played bass. Their friend Didgerita played drums and their other friend, Hasty played guitar and sometimes keyboards if the need came.

Rip was so lost in his thoughts that he didn’t notice his science teacher, Mrs. Griffiths, come over and take the note right off of his desk. He looked up at her with a indifferent, and slightly annoyed expression as she read the note.

She frowned at the two of them, “I’d appreciate it if you two lovebirds would set up your dates outside of class.” The class snickered at the teacher’s unnoticed pun about “lovebirds” as Rip grumbled something and sank in his seat.

“Yes Mrs. Griffiths,” Melinda said sweetly, though there was a hint of sarcasm in her voice, lucky for her the teacher was too busy getting back to teaching to notice the duck’s sarcasm.

Rip sent Melinda a half-hearted glare for not denying what was untrue. She, in reply, just shrugged and winked at him, a playful smile on her face.

Rip sunk lower in his seat and scowled.

Melinda smirked when she noticed that a blush was forming on the roadrunner’s face.

The bell rang. The day was finally over.

Oh, sweet freedom, how I salute thee!’ thought Rip in mock enthusiasm as he got up and left the classroom.

Melinda followed after him, “so, do you wanna just go and chill until it’s time for band practice?”

“Sorry, I can’t. My brother and his friends are coming to visit, and they won’t be leaving for awhile. So, of course, I have to go and listen to my brother’s stories of his wonderful adventures as a superhero,” that last part had sarcasm and annoyance dripping from it.

“Oh, that’s all right, I’ll just go with you!” said Melinda, she really didn’t have anything to do that afternoon, and plus, this could be fun.

Rip stopped, “no,” he stated firmly then continued walking. By this point they were already out of the school and on their way to Rip’s house.

Melinda pretended to be hurt, “why not?” she asked, pouting.

“Because I said so,” Rip replied. He knew exactly what would happen if she went home with him and met the Loonatics. It wasn’t that she’d go all “fangirl” about it, she was quite the opposite of that. It was that she had a way of making things really embarrassing and awkward for him, and right now, his pride wouldn’t allow that to happen.

“Oh, c’mon, Rip! I promise I won’t embarrass you!” she pleaded, ‘though I do intend to,’ she thought to herself mischievously.

Can she read my mind or something!?’ Rip frowned in annoyance, “Melinda, I said no. Now go home,” he sighed exasperatedly when he realized they were already walking up to the front door of his house.

“Plea-“

“No.”

“Oh come on-“

“No Melinda.”

By now, Rip was already unlocking his front door. As soon as he started to open it Melinda wrapped her arms around his neck, “C’mon, Rip! I promise I won’t do anything wrong, you know how much I love you!” she exclaimed in a sugary-sweet tone.

The door was now fully open and Rip froze, in the living room, staring directly at him were the Loonatics and his parents. They were smiling knowingly at him, his mother looked like she was about to burst with joy at the sweet display of affection.

Rip looked at the group, then Melinda, then back. He then untangled Melinda’s arms from around his neck and moved about five feet way from her so fast it looked like he’d suddenly acquired superspeed. He held his arms up in front of himself defensively, his face burning red, “woah, no! It’s not what it looks like.”

“’Sup, Mr. And Mrs. R? ‘Tics?” Melinda greeted coolly as if nothing had happened.

“Oh-Melinda!-It’s-wonderful-to-see-you-again!-How-are-you-sweetie?” Harriet went up to greet her.

Ralph and Rev rushed over to talk to Rip. Rev nudged his younger brother with his elbow, smiling slyly, “wow-Rip!-I-had-no-idea-that-you-had-a-girlfriend!-Good-job!”

Rip opened his mouth to reply, but stopped when he felt his father’s arm sling itself over his shoulder. Ralph looked down seriously upon his youngest son, “Rip,-I-think-it’s-about-time-you-and-I-had-a-long-talk.”

Rip glared Melinda as she smirked back and winked at him before going back to her conversation with Harriet and the Loonatics. ‘I’ll get you for this, Melinda.

End Chapter 2

Jetsir: Whoo! Second chapter! I’m going to introduce Didgerita and Hasty later on in my story. I hope you know that this is the most I’ve written for a story in such a short period of time, so I hope you all like it.

I’ll try to get more chapters up soon, but in the meantime, R&R please!

Remember: I shall bake snicker-doodles with your sugary-sweet comments and roast marshmallows with your flames.

Again, this is all naturalistic and Rip is so well in character as well as the other characters. And I must say that I do like Melinda Mallard very much. She seems like such a sweet character. And not a Mary-Sue thank God!

aww Keep this up Jetsir. You're doing a great job.

Living In The Shadow Chapter 3

Chapter 3

“So, you’re Rip’s girlfriend?” asked Lexi, interested in the duck’s relationship with her teammate’s younger brother. They were now all seated in chairs or on the couch in the Runners’ living room, all except for Ralph, Rev, and Rip, the former two were giving Rip a long talk about “how to treat a lady” and not letting him get a word in edge-wise to explain things.

Mrs. Runner was listening attentively, though she was occasionally glancing nervously in Tech’s direction, much to the coyote’s annoyance. Things had become rocky between him and Rev’s parents since they figured out he wasn’t really a vegetarian.

Melinda shook her head, “nah, I just like watching him suffer,” she said, nodding towards Rip who looked miserable as his father lectured him.

The Loonatics stared at her.

Harriet laughed, “Oh-little-Melinda-has-been-friends-with-Rip-for-longer-than-I-can-remember. The-two-of-them-are-always-together,-it’s-so-cute!” she explained in her fast way of talking. Apparently the roadrunner was quite fond of the young duck.

-*-

“Pa, she’s not my girlfriend, she was just joking around,” Rip explained once his father finally gave him a chance to speak.

“Oh,” said Ralph. The males of the Runner family stood there for a moment. Ralph and Rev standing awkwardly while Rip had a slouched stance with his hands in his pockets looking rather annoyed.

“Well…that’s-ok,-Rip. I’m-sure-you’ll-meet-someone-nice-soon! You-just-need-to-perk-up-your-attitude,-that’s-all!” Rev said trying to comfort his brother.

Rip didn’t need to be comforted and that last statement ticked him off. He let out an exasperated sigh, “I am so out of here,” he said as he began walking towards the door.

He was forced to stop when his father pulled him back by the collar of his jacket, “just-where-do-you-think-you’re-going,-son? You’re-brother-and-his-friends-are-staying-here-for-dinner. Now-don’t-be-rude-and-go-set-the-table!”

Darn, and he almost got away, too.

He sighed again and went into the kitchen to get out the plates and silverware.

-*-

“Well, I guess I’d better get going…” said Melinda, standing.

“Oh-nonsense,-sweetie,-you-can-stay-for-dinner-if-you-want-to,” offered Harriet.

Melinda looked uncertain, “are you sure? It looks like you got a full house tonight,” she pointed out, motioning to the Loonatics.

“It’s-fine! We-can-always-make-room-for-one-more!” the roadrunner insisted.

“All right, Mrs. R, I’ll stay. I just gotta call the ‘rents and tell them where I am, then I’ll go help Rip set the table. Is it cool if I use your phone?” asked Melinda, finally giving in to Harriet’s offer. She quickly learned in her time being Rip’s friend that Mrs. Runner rarely took no for an answer, why would she start now?

“Sure-you-can! The-phone’s-right-there-in-the-kitchen!” said Harriet happily, glad that the girl had come to her senses before she had to drag the argument out any longer.

“Alright, thanks,” Melinda smiled warmly then excused herself to the kitchen to call her parents.

-*-

“Melinda’s a real interestin’ goil,” observed Ace as soon as Melinda was out of earshot.

Slam grunted something incomprehensible in agreement.

“Indeed she is, but I’m curious…” Tech trailed off in thought.

“So…are you going to tell us what you’re so curious about, or are you just going to sit there and stare at the wall?” asked Duck, rapping his knuckles atop the coyote’s head.

Ralph went over to his wife, “it-looks-like-coyotes-aren’t-that-bright-after-all.”

“I’ll-say,” Harriet replied.

Of course, they were both whispering loud enough for the coyote to hear them, they made sure of that. Tech grumbled something under his breath before continuing, “as I was saying, I’m curious as to how their friendship began. It’s quite easy to tell that the two of them are almost complete polar opposites.”

“Hmmm,-you’re-right,-Tech.-They-do-seem-to-have-a-lot-of-differences,-and-Rip-does-look-like-Melinda-gets-on-his-nerves-a-lot. Maybe-we-should-ask-them-about-it. What-do-you-guys-think? Because-you-allk-now-that-I-value-your-opinion-and-all,-and-let’s-just-face-it,-it-would-be-really-rude-if-I-didn’t-care-about-what-you-thought,-but-I-do.-I’m-just-saying…” Rev rambled on.

“A’right, Rev, we get it,” Ace said, cutting off the fast-talking roadrunner.

“Well, I honestly think it’s none of our business, and Rip does seem to get ticked off when people pester him about things. I don’t think we should ask him about it,” pointed out Lexi, the soul voice of feminine reason in the group.

“Plus,-I-bet-it’d-be-hard-to-understand-those-two-even-if-they-did-explain-their-friendship,” said Harriet, “Those-two-are-friends-simply-because-they’re-friends.”

The rest of the group seemed to agree with the women’s reasoning and decided to more or less drop the confusing subject.

End Chapter 3

Jetsir: Chapter 3, y’all. Meh, I didn’t like this chapter, there’s a lot that I don’t like about it, but this chapter was necessary. I needed this to let you all know what the Loonatics thought of Melinda and Rip’s friendship (if I didn’t, they wouldn’t have gotten nearly this amount of dialogue). So yeah, there you go. I might get chapter 4 up today, I might not. I hope you all like it. R&R please.

Remember: I shall bake snicker-doodles with your sugary-sweet comments and roast marshmallows over your flames.

mad.gif Nasty parents trying to insult Tech! True I'm not a Techie but they shouldn't have that grudge on him!

Anyways, back to the story. Now that the chapter's up, I too am wondering how they both became friends. Another good chapter as per usual. aww.gif Keep up the good work.

Yes, I agree, they shouldn't be like that with Tech (I'm a Techie myself), but I couldn't help it! It's so in character with them and it's funny, too (I'm a bit of a sadist when it comes to my fanfics, I just love torturing characters XD).

How Melinda and Rip became friends is a cute and funny story, but I'm saving it for later on. ^^

Thanks for the wonderful review, Akira_Cat! ^^

Your welcome, it is indeed very in-character of them to insult Tech.

Yeah, but it's kind of hard to get their personalities down based off of what little I saw of them in "The Family Business" >.< It looks like I got my work cut out for me with this one ^^;

Yep, now you know why you might have fealt Rip was off character in my fan-fic.

Because its hard to put them in diffrent situations when youve only seen so little of them.

Living In The Shadow Chapter 4

Chapter 4

Melinda’s parents said that it was all right for her to stay for dinner, and after she told Mrs. Runner, she went back to the kitchen to help Rip with setting the table.

They set the table in an uncomfortable silence. Rip seemed to be ignoring, probably upset with her for embarrassing him earlier.

They continued on like this until Melinda couldn’t take it anymore, “c’mon, Rip, don’t be like this. You know it was only a joke,” she tried to reason with him.

He just continued to ignore her, they had finished setting out the plates, so he began to set out silver ware. He smirked inwardly when he heard her huff angrily. If there was one thing that could make Melinda mad, it was ignoring her.

“Rip…”

No reply.

“C’mon, Rip,” her voice was growing more agitated.

Still, he didn’t reply.

Rip!” she was furious by now. A little growl escaped her through grit teeth.

A full smile had formed on his face, but he did not acknowledge her any further and continued to set the table.

That’s it!’ she stormed up in front of him, putting herself between the roadrunner and the table to prevent him from putting anymore silverware on the table. She wrenched a spoon he was holding from his hands, then hit him on the head with it.

Bonk! “Ow! Linda!” exclaimed Rip irritably, calling her by her most hated nickname while rubbing his head.

She whacked him again, “don’t call me that! And stop ignoring me! You know how much I hate that!”

“Well how do you think I felt out there? You embarrassed me in front of my family and the Loonatics!” Rip snapped back.

“You know I was just kidding, and I explained that to them, too!” she argued, “and since when do you care about what other people think about you!?”

Rip stopped, his eyes becoming downcast, glaring down at a spot on the floor, “since they all began to see me as a bad guy…”

“Rip…” the duck put her arms on her friend’s shoulders. She opened her mouth to say something, but shut it, realizing she didn’t have anything to say to make Rip feel better. She had known that he had been upset about the incident that had happened a few weeks ago, but she had never known that it had gotten to him this bad. She mentally cursed herself, ‘you idiot! And you’re supposed to be his best friend!’

She wrapped her arms around Rip’s neck and pulled him into the most comforting hug she could muster, resting her head on his chest. She couldn’t tell whether the comfort was for him, her, or the both of them, she just hugged, “I’m sorry…” she said softly.

Rip sighed deeply and hugged her back gently, resting his head on hers. He gave her a little squeeze that let her know that he had forgiven her. They stood there awkwardly, he was never really good at touchy-feely stuff. After a moment of silence, he spoke, “sorry I ignored you…”

She laughed into his chest, he smiled, “and what about calling me Linda?” she asked, pulling away from him and looking into his eyes.

“I have no regrets for that one,” he replied smirking.

She glared, raising the spoon to hit him again. He quickly snatched it from her hand, “nuh-uh. Not this time,” he said.

Hey!” she cried, and began to reach for her makeshift “Rip Beater”.

He held the spoon high, much higher than the short duck could reach. She leaned on him, one hand on his shoulder as she outstretched her arm to grab the spoon while standing on her tiptoes.

Darn him for being so tall!’

Rip leaned back farther, only to lose his balance and fall to the ground, landing on his back. Since Melinda was using Rip as her support to stand, she fell too, landing on top of the poor roadrunner.

Ow…” grunted Rip, though she was a small girl, he was a rather frail boy.

-*-

Outside in the living room, the others had heard a crash from the dining room.

“Oh-dear,-what-was-that?” asked Mrs. Runner, growing concerned.

“Don’t-worry,-Ma. I’ll-go-check-on-it-and-I’ll-be-back-before-you-can-say-’Seed-Cookie!’” said Rev, going into the dining room leaving a rush of wind and red and black contrail in his wake.

-*-

Rev entered the dining room within less than two seconds after he had left the living room, “Hey,-Rip,-are-you-and-Melinda- SWEET-MEEP-MEEP!” Rev exclaimed when he saw his little brother in a compromising position with his not-girlfriend.

The three of them just stared at each other for an awkward minute or two.

“Uh…” Melinda started, “he stole my spoon…”

End Chapter 4

Jetsir: There’s chapter 4 for you! It was going to be longer, but I decided to upload this since it just seemed complete enough… uh, yeah.

Yes, Rip’s secret demons are revealed! Poor thing. Poor Rev, too. He got quite a shock, didn’t he?

I hope you like it, the next chapter will be better, I promise!

I am in love with story. I really am. And it takes a hell of a lot for me to say that.

You are absolutely brilliant at characterization. With such a relatively short amount of text, you have managed to convey Rip and Melinda's friendship perfectly. And it makes me all warm and fuzzy inside - which is, again, hard to manage for me. I also love Melinda's character. She's just so spunky and funny and spontaneous - makes me wish I knew someone just like her in real life. And, as you say in the story, Rip and her are total opposites, yet you make the meld together so damn well.

I really like where you're going with the plot too. It is entirely realistic, something that people can relate to on some level, which is always a plus. And you can feel the tension growing not only between Melinda and Rip and the rest of the characters, but also between Melinda and Rip themselves (although a different kind of tension.) At least, that's what I am getting out of it.

I'd say the premise of this story is really good too - the aftermath of Rip's rampage and what it makes people think of him is something I did not even think about, but it is definitely an issue. And, once again, you've conveyed Rip's situation at hand very well in the first 2 chapters.

I honestly can't think of a critique for this - it is pretty much spot on as it is. One thing though, and it's more of just a preference for me, is the way you write Rev, Ma Runner and Pa Runner's dialog. The dashes are very commonly used in writing their parts, yes. However, I find it a little more effective to not use dashes and just eliminate all punctuation from their parts. For example, this:

“Hmmm,-you’re-right,-Tech.-They-do-seem-to-have-a-lot-of-differences,-and-Rip-
does-look-like-Melinda-gets-on-his-nerves-a-lot. Maybe-we-should-ask-them-about-it. What-do-you-guys-think?"

Becomes this:

"“Hmmm you’re right Tech they do seem to have a lot of differences and Rip does look like Melinda gets on his nerves a lot maybe we should ask them about it What do you guys think?"

I just find that this method makes the dialog much easier to read and, in my opinion, actually portray the roadrunner's fast-talking-ness better than the dashes do.

Otherwise, this story is fantastic. And it gets my definite seal of awesome. *STAMP*

Heh, ''Uh... he stole my spoon.''

Again, dragon_wing beat me to it.

But I would say, the dashes are good for telling the diffrence between when Rev or any of the road runners are speed talking, or moderate speed talking. I only use the dashes for when they're super-speed talking.

Thank you all for your wonderful reviews! You all make me so happy! ^^

Dragon Wing: Wow, just wow. Words cannot express how happy you made me feel with your review. Thank you! I feel honored to get the seal of awesome from you, and I'll try hard not to let you down!

Yeah, I know that the "-" thing isn't as effective, but it's just how I write their speech along with how I write the speech of other fast talkers (like Quicksilver, the Flash, etc.)

Akira_Cat: Thank you, Sweetie! -hugs- Yeah, poor Rip, it's weird how I have a thing for making cannon characters miserable ^^;

Techfan: Hahah, well, what would you say in a situation like that? XD

Siamese: Thanks!

Thank you to all of you who read and/or leave a comment for my story. It really does make my day. I have a real good feeling about this story, I hope you all do, too.
