Technically this should be in the Rules and Guidelines forum, but since hardly anyone goes there, I posted it here since I and a few others want this to be read. Once it is read, it'll be moved there.
Basically in the last few months there's been an issue that this board hasn't really had before: people making boatloads of posts with maybe just a smilie ( ) or one word in it. I can see these kinds of posts being permissible in role-play topics, but in forums and topics meant for actual discussion these kinds of posts are simply detrimental and don't add anything to the discussion. What's worse, people who actually do want to have a discussion have to scroll through sometimes dozens of these kinds of posts just to find something on-topic. This problem is probably most evident in the Loonatics, Villains, & Other Characters forum.
Yes, this board tends to get off topic. But these kinds of posts go past off-topic and just go into the realms of borderline spam. Spam is a bad thing in any situation. So don't do it.
Just remember to have good netiquette. And good netiquette entails contributing to the discussion in some way or another. And, sadly, posts with a simple smilie in them do not contribute. They just clutter topics. It's not just me who has seen the problem with this, by the way - many others have voiced their complaints over these kinds of posts, some to the point where they simply don't read these topics anymore. There's clearly a problem there.
This is not to say this board still can't be fun. People have enjoyed this board for over 2 years by making fun, sometimes random but overall meaningful posts. I know none of you are incapable of having more in-depth discussions. So don't censor yourself by posting only one emoticon or a "Meh". Put your typing skills to the test and reveal yourself to us. We won't bite.
I guess that's all I have to say about that. But me and the other mods will probably have to delete these kinds of posts if we see them from here on out.
Well, I straight up admit to being one of the people who's getting annoyed with all the emoticon posts. We're not trying to point fingers or personally attack anyone with stating this, I might add, however, there are simply just a number of reasons this has to be said.
For one thing, posting emoticon after emoticon may /seem/ like a failproof way to get up there in posts, but it's quite simply not fair to those of us who have earned our ranks through actual conversation. There's nothing wrong with the /occasional/ emoticon post, but frankly, it's just gotten out of hand in the past months. People have left because of it and others are on the verge of doing so.
We just want some good old fashioned conversation back on the boards. Like Dragon Wing already said, everyone's capable of having more in-depth discussions. It's really not that hard. Instead of putting a nodding emoticon, why not try saying something along the lines of, "Yeah, I agree, /because/..." I don't think that's such an unreasonable request. -shrugs-
I think one time I made a comment about "missing conversation" after about seven posts in a row with nothing but , and then they responded by posting nodding smileys. I had no idea whether to laugh or cry. And I know this isn't a contest, but the total posts things ticks me off when I see people with one-word comments and smileys up their with magykwire (what is a magykwire anyway?) while people such as D_W are only Black Hole Survivors. I believe techfan is the only person who's high up their with intelligent posts all the way.

Great 1st act as mod (or second or third or whatever number this is).
Well, I personally don't care about post count rankings (in fact, I wish I had less posts, as I've said before) but, yeah, it seems to be important for some people. To be honest, if I owned a board, I would set it up so post counts were invisible. Because when people start caring too much about pot count, well, you get what we have here.
Me: I SHALL HAVE THEE FERRET GOD OF DOOM SMITE YE DOWN IF YE FAIL TO DO SO!!!!!! I SHAAAAAAALLLLL!!!!!!!! Ozzie: *standing on a tall pillar in a cape and robes with his stone glowing* MWAHAHAHA!!!!! Do as she says or I shall turn you all into bugs! AHAHAHAHA!!!!!! Ant:... Is that supposed to be a threat? Rev: *squeals like a girl and jumps into Ace's arms* They're BACK!!! D8
As far as I've noticed, Serenity, you weren't amongst the people who really do this kind of thing frequently. Or if you did, I didn't notice it too much.
There's specifically like three people I have in mind when thinking about this.
I'm glad that issue has been bought up. I had the same problem having to constantly scroll down posts just to get to a post where it actually has the poster actually wants to discuss the discussion.
But you can still have more fun all the same as DragonWing has said.

I'm in the process of fixing this by cleaning up the threads that are cluttered with emoticon after emoticon. In two threads alone tonight, I've cleared up /twelve/ pages of emoticons and general spam. My eyes are about to fall out. D:
Abby: Do you think it's possible to die from boredom? Chen: I don't think so. Abby: What if your mind wandered off in a daydream and you forgot to eat or drink for days? Chen: Then you'd die of starvation and dehydration. Abby: Caused by boredom.

I think I could do something about the total posts, but there'd have a pretty long community-wide discussion first.
Magykwire? Um, I forgot. The only thing you get from a higher post count is "prestige". Maybe. I mean, I'm the admin and I don't even have 200 posts yet.
