Um.... ok... seriously guys, it's a GENRE OF MUSIC. So next time you go calling someone an emo and insulting them, think of it like you're saying it like this:
"Hey, you genre of music! Why don't you go cut yourself a little deeper and die!?"

And if someone comes up to you and shows you the cuts on their wrists and says, "I'm an emo." They're just posers, because the people who are truly depressed and hurt themselves wouldn't refer to themselves as an emo, they would just be insulting themselves.

EXACTLY. And when someone calls another person an "emo," it's usually because they're referring to the posers. That's what they call themselves, that's what we call them. It's like a pet name for those consumed by generally short lived and unwarranted teenage angst.
I've been saying this for a while. And, usually, most people don't even get the genre of music right. Bands like Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance and AFI are not emo. Bands like Rites of Spring, Texas is the Reason, Rye Coalition - that's emo.
I hate emos who cut themselves for show. Makes me wanna punch them out. It's just a sick and twisted way of gaining attention. Like people who flaunt the fact that their parents abuse them. "Oh, look! Can you see the bruise! My Mum hit me the other day! 8D!" People who're being abused are embarrassed and ashamed. Just the same with people who're suffering depression and stuff... *siiiiiiigh* Emo-posers make me engry...

I agree with what Mizz Xtream has said. Those who are abused sometimes feel it's their fault it's happening.
But the only thing I will say about emos is some of them feel as though their life isn't worth living, so why hasn't at least one killed themselves yet?

That's the thing about emos. The real ones are dead. The ones we see moping about are the posers. -shrug-
This may condradict my first comment on this post, it may not... but what I absolutely hate is when people get all sensitive when the term is used in such a way.
Example:
When I feel moody, but my sense of humor is unaffected, I tend to tell people that I was feeling emo that day. I once said this in front of my friend and she got all upset and started ranting about how she hates it when people use that term like that because some of her friends are emos. It just makes me wonder, how's she gonna get by later in life when she gets all serious about something small like this? This doesn't just apply to the term emo...
I know what you mean about emo posers. It's seriously annoying. 2 years ago i went through a semi-emo phaze because al the kids at school hated me coz I was overweight. I was so sad I stopped eating and then people got scared that I was becoming anorexic. People called me an emo once I told them what had happened. I AM SO NOT AN EMO! I IS TO RANDOM TO BE AN EMO! Generalisation like that drives me nuts!

Emos, well one of my 1/2 sisters is one. (Her mom died so she's going through a tuff time) I myself am asked if I am one, but I say no cause I'm not rly anything. Like I not a vegitarian, I don't cut myself, and I like bands not only My Chemical Romance, but also other bands that are said to make fun of emos (which I rly don't see how) like Mindless Self Indulgence. ya know.
But as for them in general, I have nothing against them. They acctually seem like cool people to me. Leave them alone, they did nothing to u, is my opinon.

But I also have a good sense of humor, and I'm not always unhappy, unless in in school...
Besides I prefer being my own thing...I'm just kinda neutral with things, I can agree and disagree at the same time with almost every situation. I'm an outcast...at least thats what I think of my position.

People have their tastes and tastes need to be respected. For example, i know i wouldn't like my music/dressing/whatever taste to be criticized. It's only my matter and no one else's business. And i don't think that anyone else is really font of it, really

I do know a few emos The ones I know do complain and mope a great deal of their free time. Two of my friends (an emo) tried to kill themselves. This made me very upset with them. Granted, they haven't ever tried it again since my little... "talk" with both of them, but I'm still very disappointed in them. Emos are actually very friendly. I like them, despite their flaws.
... I'm still not used to the word "emo". It makes me think of EMUS! 8D Awesome birds.

My sister and I like My Chemical Romance (Who apparently are emos)
My sister has a...unique....dress style, and she wears a lot of black. And so all of the idiots in my classes always ask me if my sister is an emo, and Im like: "NO!"
And once, my best friend's idiot brother was talking to me, and he asked me if my sister was an emo and if she was ever going to jump off of the bridge (that we have to walk over to get to school)
I ended up getting really angry at him, so I gave him the finger and walked away...he hasn't spoken to me since, but I'm not complaining.
