Help With Writing Poems

Yeah, I suck at it. DX

For example, I have to write a short poem about my favourite food for my English.... I have the ability to write a freakin' six-page essay on that same subject, but I can't think of anything for a poem! DX

Does anyone have some tips? Coz I really need them! DX

That really didn't help, Colours.

Why don't you write a haiku??

5 syllables
7 syllables
5 syllables

eg

I really like toast
It's very easy to make...
Just bread and butter.

I'd love to be able to do that, but unfortunately, I have no choice. It's a project for school (which I'm actually finished, but it took a lot of help from my mom). I'd just like some tips on how to write them so I can do it on my own.

Colours: At least you tried to make me feel better! XD

Um, internal rhyming is good! That's when two or more words rhyme in the same sentence ^^

Alliterations (words that start with the same letters or sounds) are good as well.

End rhymes (words that rhyme every other sentences) are kind of predictable, but easy.

Yeah, we're doing poetry, too. =3

I'm pretty sure alliteration is when words start with the same letters and assonance is words that have the same sounds.

Alliteration - Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.

Assonance - How now, brown cow?

I did poetry last year, but I didn't enjoy it. I can give you some hints, though.

Read it out loud. You'll hear for yourself what sounds right and what sounds wrong.

Sound out your stanzas with claps. This will ensure that each line has a repetitive rhythm that remains consistent with previous rhythms.

E.g.

Every room, from wall to wall, (4)
Is packed and disarranged. (3)
Full of kids and furniture, (4)
Forgotten and estranged. (3)

Here is some stuff from my notes...

"Poetry may be many things. It might be a highly musical form of language, metrical, playing with sound in various ways - i.e. some form of verse. But this is only sufficient (not necessary) to calling it poetry. It may be ideas based, without too much attention to metrics or sound, a type of compressed or supercharged prose.

Metaphor, image, surprising conjunctions, paradoxes, these are the common tools of this kind of poem. It's main point is to say something about the world in a suprprising way, in unique voice of the composing mind. Another sort of poetry my be language based, focused on language itself, trying to expand what is possible in it's native tongue."

A lot of this may seem to be pretty much gibberish. I'll try focusing on the more determining facts that might help.

"-it's moving, exciting, funny, memorable, intriguing, shocking, persistent in its effect on the mind, It doesn't repeat the obvious, and opens us to another way of understanding the world or confirms (in a way we hadn't exactly thought of) something we've known for a long time. It's simultaneously familiar and strange. It gives courage. It dares to find truths, obliquely or head on."

"-it should be precise about the thing and reticent about the feeling, for as soon as the mind responds and connects with the thing the feeling shows in the words."

"Half the art of poetry is knowing what to leave, or take out."

"Contained in poetic imagery is the thing observed but also the point of view of the observer."

"Being personal does not mean being self-absorbed or trivially domestic."

"Mataphorical language and imagery. Precise dictation: attention to choice of words. Layouts of lines, stanzas and use of space. Sound and rhythm. Purpose evident through theme. Saying it in a FRESH way."

That's enough for the lesson today. If you feel like anymore knowledge, let me know and I'll type out more notes for you.

P.S. That stanza up above was from one of my poems. Don't steal, plz.

P.P.S. I hate poetry, btw.
