Well,Akira Cat ^_^since in my school,only grades 3 to 6 can only learn French...and...since I'm in grade four,I know who to ask if my teacher gives me an assignment.Oh yeah,she gave it a week ago and she told us how do you say elf and candy cane in french cuz' she doesn't remember.So,How do you say elf in french and candy cane in french?
P.S.My class is making a poem and we thought alot of Christmas things in french.Merry Christmas!

Um... actually, I was in year 5 when I first started learning French. So my guess is that you learnt it when we were lets say 10 years old. Our system is a little different to America I guess. Cos we don't exactly have grades. We have years instead but I do know where you're coming from.

Well sometimes I wonder that myself. But at least I have an answer to that question:
If I was on a cruise or ferry or any mode of transport that can travel to foreign countries and they somehow got stuck or crashed or something, if I end up in France or a frnch speaking country, at least I'll be able to ask for directions without being offered a snail.
That's just my opinion but there are a variety of reasons why people take it.
Blah. I ask for Latin, they stick me in French. ><; Well, it doesn't matter, I guess. At least French was my... fourth choice. And I'll probably use it a lot more than I would Latin, heh.

I do come from Canada Akira Cat.So does kaejae.I live in Winnipeg.Our old principal which is a male,moved from our school and became a principal in a high school.Our principal is a female.And it's very interesting that you have years instead of grades in your country.

Well, I have a backwards clock that is completely, well... backwards. The numbers are the wrong way round and since I got so used to telling the time from that clock, I get confused with a normal clock. And I didn't even travel along the way.
"Latin language is dead"? Just a guess. The french "mourir" comes from that word "mortua" in latin, meaning to die or anything to do with death. The other part were easy to work out. I'm just one of those people who show they're working in instead of just saying the answer so hey.

Well Latin still lives on...in the etymological roots of certain English words today. He! He!
I admire all of you that know more than one language quite well. All my family can speak Cantonese (and my dad speaks various other dialects of Chinese from Malaysia as well) except for me! It's so shameful, but i'm stuck primarily with just British English. Everyone else in my family is bilingual except me! I did do GCSE Spanish back at school, but i've forgotten most of it now. I did do French before that, but i was never good at it. And i did do a course in basic Japanese about 2 years ago, but i'm most certainly not fluent in it. *Sigh* I'm a limited monolingual.
Stuck with one language huh? Well one of my friends know how that feels...

Me: Fine! Fluent in English and Chinese(modern), and almost just as good in Russian! Well funny to say, but even though my mother language is Chinese, the best language I'm at is English! Heck sometimes I think English...well...change that to all the time.

DO *NOT* take Latin unless you have to. It's a lot harder than the teachers want you to know. I took it. And I failed. IT SUCKED. The only thing I took from that class is "Herba est bona", which according to Cali, isn't even gramatically right, and that's what our teacher (inadvertantly) taught us!
Let me try:

I haveth a question! Okay, at my school, we have a computer program on which I learn French, and then I do work in a workbook and I say vocab to the teacher. Anyway, the computer program say that the French word, "lit" means "reads/is reading", but we looked up the word "lit" in a French/English dictionary, and according to that, it means "double bed." Which is correct?

Both, actually. The noun, 'un lit' is a bed (any kind of bed, not just double), but 'lit' is also the third-person singular conjugation of the verb 'lire', to read. You tell the difference based on context.
It's kinda like the sentence "Le ver vert va vers le verre." If you say that out loud, you've got four words that all sound the same, but based on what each is doing in the sentence, you can figure out that they mean 'worm', 'green', 'toward', and 'glass', respectively.
I find it very odd that your software is teaching direct translations of verb forms rather than teaching you how to conjugate. It's can lead to confusion, which it has this time, and also is inefficient. If you learn the pattern, you can apply it to other verbs in the same structural family, which in this case would include 'dire', 'rire', 'sourire', and écrire, for example.

High school, Akira, high school! We don't get any real foreign language training until high school. My fourth year of French was during my junior year. XP

Ah. Sorry. I know America runs it's country different from Britain but I was just getting over dramatic. So far I only read snippets from some novels.
Plus we have french assistants at our school.
That takes me to the day I cried when this french assistant said she was going back to France. Her name is Camille. She was so energetic and we had a some good laughs with boring French work. Well, if she saw what I was writing, I'm sure she'd tell me off. But I probably deserve it anyway. I wouldn't like it if someone said our country sucks because it's true. But at least we exchanged e-mail addresses so we can keep in touch.
That's ok. We actually read Le Petit Prince during French III, but were spoon-fed so much that I don't really count that, and when I read Le Silence de la Mer in French IV, I still depended heavily on the English version to really grasp the story beyond the basic plot. L’Étranger in French V was really the first novel I got through without too much help.
My school was so small that we only had one French teacher. She was this crazy middle-aged lady that behaved like a grandmother, with all her students as her grandchildren. It really made the class a lot of fun. I haven't kept in touch very well since I started university, but I'm planning to drop by sometime, now that I'm home for the summer.

In my middle school, we have French, Latin, English (duh), Spanish and I think Korean. Not completely sure though. We get to choose which ones to go in. And I think there are more choices in the nearby high school.
I'm taking English and French and luckily, they're two of my best classes!! Though I do need help sometimes. At least I know where to go if I get stuck about french!!
We had five levels of French and Spanish, and two of Latin and Japanese. The Latin and Japanese courses were done by satellite through another nearby high school. The classes were just too small to make it worth hiring two more teachers.

1. You're almost right. But it's "Tech port une chemise noir et vert".
2. Yep. Slam is eating some bread. Correct.
3. That's okay. Some untranslatable French is put into English instead. And yes you got it right. My guess for pick-me-up-quick shake would be "Prendre-moi-hausse-vite-lait". But I know it's wrong.
4. The correct translation for this one is "Lexi et Cassidy portent des chemises roses et des jeans bleux". Good try though.
