“Ugh…” A black four-fingered hand found its way to the snooze button of a digital alarm clock. “I hate Mondays.”
“It’s not Monday, Danny.”
“It…isn’t?” Danger Duck groaned and pulled his covers further over his head. “Whozzair? Coffee…”
“It’s getting cold, you know.”
Duck stuck his head under his pillow. “Whoever you are, go away.”
“Aw, but Danny, I thought you liked coffee.”
“Wait…” Duck leapt up faster than…something that’s really fast. He was rewarded with the sight of a girl in a thin black coat, her black-rimmed glasses reflecting light, sitting primly on the edge of his bedside table, a tray carrying two mugs on her lap. Two white feathered wings contrasted her choice of clothing, jutting out from her shoulder blades.
“M-Mary?!”
“Hey, Danny,” she said, smiling. “You wanted two sugars, right?”
“Y-you-you-but-”
“Three?”
“You’re- b- d- you-” Duck shook his head. “It’s a- you can’t- what?”
“Two sugars, then.”
“Y-you’re alive?” he whispered. The moment he said it, he knew it was the wrong thing to say.
“Th-that’s debatable,” Mary said, turning her head slightly.
“I-wait, I- I didn’t-”
“Anyway…I thought you’d like some coffee.” Mary lifted a mug and handed it to a stunned Duck.
“B-but, you- I- how?” he managed to sputter out.
“I…came to visit,” said Mary, smiling gently. “Oh, really, Danny, do you think I’d leave you alone? And to think, I awarded you the title of BFF and you’ve forgotten our promises already!”
“Mary…” Duck could only stare at her dark chocolate eyes, not knowing what to say, her name echoing in his ears like a chorus of church bells.
“I heard Pinkster turned evil…’s he okay?” Mary tilted her head, and her black hair swept off her shoulder.
“Y-yeah…”
“Did you get the boots and cape I sent you?”
“That was you?” Duck stood up shakily, unable to believe it. “You sent me that?”
“You never knew I was your fangirl,” she said, a sad half-smile on her lips.
“I- how did you-”
“That’s a secret…drink your coffee before it gets cold,” she said, setting the tray down. “I need to go now…your teammates should be waking up soon.”
“Wait- don’t go,” Duck pleaded. “Mary, you-”
“Good luck with your next mission, whatever it is,” she called, already at the door.
“Mary!”
Duck grabbed her arm. A moment of silence passed before Mary turned to her friend.
“Look, I really need to go…”
“Could- could I just do one more thing?”
“Just one, then,” conceded Mary, seeing Duck’s slightly panicked expression. Before she had known it, he had pulled her into a hug.
“Can you come visit again?” he whispered.
“…with coffee, I suppose?”
Duck pulled back, tears streaming down his cheeks. “I- I guess…”
“’kay…I’ll see you later,” she said, heading toward the door again. Then she stopped and turned. “Love ya.”
“I- you, too…” Duck whispered. Mary smiled again and turned, this time disappearing without a trace. A moment later, the door opened, and Duck scrambled back into his bed.
”I’m coming, I’m coming,” he said, pretending to yawn. “Just…gimme five minutes…”
“All right…” The door shut again, but Duck stayed under his covers. The clock ticked, the only other sound he could hear besides his own heartbeat. After several long moments of hearing the seconds pass by, he threw off his covers and rolled off his bed. Blinking, he looked at the two mugs of coffee. Picking one up, he saw a little ‘DD’ printed near the handle. Duck sighed.
“Might as well…” Taking a few sips, he quickly left the room.
No one noticed a little white feather floating near the closet.
