Every myth or Legendis walcomed! Just write it please!
I just realized how much time I hadn’t read any Greek mythology! It was years I think… So here are some myths, my favorites and least known. I give you the titles and the genre, you tell me what you want!

“Narcissus, flower of death” (romance, pain)
“Sisyphus, the smartest of Greece” (hmmm… You can call it only a story…)
“Orpheus” (romance, drama)
“The sphinx” (how I love this one! Drama)
“Ikarios and Irigony” (father and daughter love, drama)
“Damon and Findias” (friendship –I love this one too…)
“Iro and Leandros” (romance, drama)
“Soul and Cupid” (romance)
“Arion the guitarist” (charm of music –couldn’t find anything else…)

Error: Almost all of these myths, haven’t got a happy ending. But they’re still great! Tell me what you want, and I’ll write!

Okay, I can remember this one easily :D

                                    The secret name of RA

After the birth of the children of Nut, Ra, the creater of all things, was angry that he had been outwitted. Nut, the lady of the skies, begged Thoth, the ibis god of wisdom, to take care of her oldest son, Osiris and raise him away from the wrath of Ra.

Over time, Ra's anger died down and he welcomed the now grown up children of Nut to his court. By this time he had grown increadably old and the other god's were still talking about the prophecy of Osiris taking over the throne. And who wouldn't want Osiris to be the next king? He was good looking, kind, cultured and wise. He was loved by everyone and he also had a beautiful wife, his sister, Isis. Isis was a clever and gifted magican, who was taught by the god of magic, Thoth. Because she was a clever student, Thoth (against his better judgement) also taught her the secret power of Names.

Now Isis was impatient. She wanted Osiris to be the king now and she, the first queen among the goddesses. So she would have to think of a
way to make Ra give up the throne. She couldn't do it by force, Even in his old age, Ra was very powerful. So she dicided she have to use her cunning.

Again, Ra was very old and in the warm atmosphere of his throne room, he would nod off and doze in his chair. As he slept, drool from his beak would dribble out and land on the floor next to his feet.

This was what Isis was hoping for, she crept into the room and without disturbing the sleeping god king, she took alittle of his drool from the floor and exited the room. She then went to her own room where she wouldn't be disturbed and mixed the drool with clay. As she was molding and kneeding the clay, she spoke words of power and magical chants. When she had finished, she had made a clay snake but it wasn't a model, it was alive.

Isis then put the snake into a box and took it outside near some reeds.

Everyday, Ra would go and walk the land of Egypt to see that all was well. The other gods and goddesses would walk beside him, making sure he would not trip and fall. On one of these walks, he was just walking past some reeds, a snake shot out and sank it's poisonous fangs into the god's ankle. Normally, Ra would not feel the pain or be poisoned by a normal snake that he had created but this one was not made by his hand. As it's poison cruised around his body, Ra gave a cry of pain and fell to the ground. All the other shocked gods and goddesses crowed around, trying to help Ra. Isis, who had been hiding in the reeds, came out and mingled with the other gods, pretending to be as shocked as they were.

One by one, the other gods and goddesses casted many charms and spells to try and save the dying god but to no avail. Isis then came forward and went to Ra's side.

"What happened Oh father?" she said, again pretending to be shocked.

"I have been smitten by something my hand did not make." He said weakly, "And now I am going to die from it's poison."

"Father, You cannot die! I can save you if you tell me your name." Isis repiled.

"Very well, I am Khnum the scarab in the morning, Ra the shining one at midday and Ra-Horakhty of Passage at sunset. I am the Shaper of mountians, the Ruler of the Heavens and the Creater of the Earth." He stopped to draw breath before continuing.

"I am the Giver of life and Hand of Justice. When I open my eyes, it is day and when I close my eyes, it is night. I am the Namer of all things. I am the Lord of the Past, the Present and the Future yet to come. I rose from the sea of Nu and when I called their names, everything came into existance."

"Father, You have many names but they are not the names I am looking for, I need to know your most Secret and most Sacred name." Isis then whispered a chant to twist the poison that made Ra cry out.

"YOU CANNOT ASK THAT OF HIM!!!" Cried a god in the crowd. The other gods murmered in agreement.

Ra was weak from the pain but he struggled to sit up and he turned his glaze upon the other gods.

"LEAVE US NOW!!!" He bellowed. Even when he was old and weak, he still had a booming voice.

Reluctantly, all the other gods and goddesses left, only leaving Ra and Isis alone. Ra then spoke again.

"Daughter, I will tell you my most holy and sacred name but it is not a word. It is a phyisical thing that lies deep in my heart. It is the source of all my power."

And so Ra gave Isis his secret name but he didn't say it, he passed it from his heart to her heart, where it would stay secret from the rest of creation.
When Isis received
the god's name, she felt a new, more wonderful power fill her whole body.

She then cried out, "I am Isis, the Weaver of Spells and Charms, I am the worker of this wonder. Drive the poison from his body for I alone know Ra, the shining one, by his sacred name!"

Almost instantly, Ra was cured but not only that but he was restored to his former glory as he was in the beginning of time. When all the gods and goddesses returned, they were in awe of Ra and congratulated Isis for curing him. After that, Ra left the throne of Egypt to Osiris and he went on board his boat to cross the sky at day and desend into the underworld by night.

Osiris became the second god king of Egypt and Isis his queen. As Isis watched the sun god rise into the sky, she promised herself only to use the Secret name of Ra when she needed it most.

And that time would come when Horus, her son, would try and wrestle the throne off his uncle, Set. But that is another story.

Oh! There's also a Native Americain myth called "The boy and the Hairy Man".

Mama and The Hairy Man.

Once there was a boy called Wabe and he lived happily in the forest with his mother. But everyday they had to be wary of The Hairy Man whenever they stepped out of their house. One day, Wabe decided to get some firewood and he decided to bring his two dogs with him.

"Be careful Wabe!" His mother cried. "The Hairy Man managed to get your father. I don't want to lose you to him."

Wabe heeded his mother's words and went into the woods with his dogs. It wasn't until a while later that he was chased by the hideous creature that he immediately recognised; the Hairy Man. The Hairy Man was like a human being, but only he was covered in black hair and he was very ugly. Plus he liked to eat people. Wabe climbed up a tree while the monster stayed at the bottom. The Hairy Man roared in anger until he had an idea.

"Come down from here boy and I shall show you some very powerful magic." The monster lured him.

Wabe just shook his head.

"I know what you're scheming." He shouted. "I'm clever enough to know that once I come down from the tree, you would only gobble me up like you did to my dad."

"COME DOWN FROM THAT TREE!" The Hairy Man bellowed.

Wabe then made a howling noise. The monster just laughed.

"Hah! You think calling for help is going to save your life?" He said.

"But you forget," Wabe said. "I wasn't calling for people. I was actually calling for my dogs to chase you away."

And with that, his dogs chased the Hairy Man away, while Wabe ran all the way home safely to his mother. She decided to teach him a new trick to her son to drive the monster away from him again.

The next day, he went into the forest again. But left his dogs tied up to a post. Once again the Hairy Man chased the boy up the tree again, leaving the Hairy Man at the bottom.

"Come down from here boy and I shall give a gift to you." The monster proposed.

Wabe shook his head again.

"I know that once I come down from this tree, you're only going to eat me." He shouted down to him.

"COME DOWN HERE NOW!" The Hairy Man ordered the boy.

Wabe then said to him: "I bet you know a lot of magic."

"I do as a matter of fact." said the monster.

"I bet you can make things disappear like magic." Wabe betted him.

"I can." The Hairy Man boasted. "What should I make disappear?"

"All the rope in the world." Wabe said.

So the monster chanted a spell and then clapped his hands.

"All the rope in the world has disappeared." The Hairy Man said.

"Are you sure?" The boy inquired.

"Of course I'm sure!" The monster said. "All the rope in the world has gone."

"Even the rope that was tying up my dogs to the post?" Wabe gave a cheeky grin.

And with that, the Hairy Man was chased once again by the dogs, making a quick escape for Wabe to go back home safe with his mother. This time, his mother told him to go hide inside a boxfor tomorrow.

Now the hairy man had enough of being tricked by the boy. And so he decided to go to Wabe's house. Once there, he saw his mother standing in the door.

"Give me the boy now!" The Hairy Man belowed in anger.

"I shall never give away my son to you for I love him too much." The mother said.

"Give me the boy and I shall leave you alone!" The monster roared.

"So if I give Wabe to you, you'll leave me alone?" She asked him.

"Yes but only if you give me the boy." The monster said.

"Alright." The mother nodded. "But once the deal is made, you can't go back on it."

"Yes! Yes!" The monster said impatiently. "Now give me the boy!"

The mother went into her house and then gave him something wrapped in a white blanket. The Hairy Man licked his lips as she gave the bundle to him.

"There you go." She said. "Now leave me be."

The Hairy Man unwrapped the blanket. But he didn't find Wabe in it. He found a squealing pig. He dropped the pigs and roared.

"GIVE ME THE BOY NOW!!!" The Hairy Man bellowed angrily.

"But we made a deal." The mother said. "And you said you wouldn't go back on it. Plus we tricked you three times. And since you were tricked three times, you must leave us alone forever."

And so the Hairy Man sulked away into the forest while the mother and Wabe lived peacefully for the rest of their lives.

THE END.

I didn't have time to translate all ofthem, but here are tow of them:

“The Sphinx”

In Thebes where Kreon was ruling after Leos’ death, Hera had sent from Egypt, the Sphinx, a beast with the face of a woman, a lion’s body and tail and the wings of a bird. That creature was sitting on a hill, and was asking every traveler:
“What is that which has two legs, three legs and four legs?”
And because no one could answer her riddle, she ate them.
Kreon had sent messengers to tell everywhere, that anyone who could answer that riddle would marry his daughter, Iokasti and he would become king.
When a young man, Idipodas learned about that, he went to face the Sphinx.
“What you ask for, is human!” he said when he heard her riddle “When he’s a baby, he walks on four, when he grows up he becomes a biped and when he becomes old, he takes a staff and becomes a three-legged being”
The Sphinx, when someone who could answer her riddle was found, she threw herself down the hill she was sitting, and met her death.
But our story doesn’t end here. Idipodas married Iokasti, not knowing that she was his mother! Iokasti gave birth to four Children. Two sons and two daughters.
But when, later was learned that Idipodas was Iokasti’s and Leos’ son and that he had killed his father and married his mother, Iokasti killed herself, because of the unbearable grief, and Idipodas was exiled from Thebes.
Their children’s fate, is another tragic story…

“Ikarios and Irigony”

Dionysus as you know, was the god of wine and amusement. He liked leaving Olympus and travelling around Greece. One day, he went to Attica and asked for a farmer’s hospitality. The farmer’s name was Ikarios, and he had a beautiful daughter, Irigony.
As I was saying, Dionysus asked for hospitality, and Ikarios offered it to him without even imagining that the stranger was a god.
While they were eating, the stranger put into a jug a red liquid and gave it to Ikarios, to try it…
It was wine, a drink which was unknown to mortals. Only Dionysus knew about it.
Ikarios tried it, licked his lips and asked with amazement the stranger:
“Where did you find that wonderful water, stranger?”
“Did you like it Ikarios?” he said to him smiling
“I swear to the name of Zeus, I haven’t tasted again such wonderful water! From which source did you took it?”
“It isn’t water Ikarios! It’s a fruit’s juice!”
He then gave Ikarios a vine branch, told him to plant it, how to make it grow and how to take the juice out of the fruit. And the morning to thank him for his hospitality, he gave him a skinbag filled with wine.
Ikarios, when the stranger left, took the skinbag with the wine and went to meet some of his friends.
“Try this wonderful drink!” he said to them “It’s sweet and delicious. It’s wonderful because everyone who drinks this, his mood changes and he becomes cheerful and happy! A stranger gave it to me, and I’m sure that a god gave it to him!”
His friends tasted the drink, they found it great, so they drank more and more, they got drunk and fell into a deep sleep. Some people who were there, came closer, they saw the shepherds motionless, and then… they believed that they were dead!
“You poisoned them! We saw you giving them to drink from that skinbag!” they said to Ikarios.
Poor Ikarios didn’t know that how too much wine was affecting, didn’t know what to say.
“But… I drank from this one too… I swear to you, I didn’t poison it! A stranger gave me this bag!”
But the others were furius for their friends’ ‘death’, so they started beating Ikarios until they killed him.
Byt their friends became alive after some hours. They woke up from their deep sleep, saw Ikarios dead, and it didn’t took them long to understand what had happened. They decided then to throw him in a well, so no one could find his body.
Hours passed, and Irigony was starting to worry about her father. She went out and started looking for him, with her dog, Maira. She was asking everyone in her path, but no one knew where Ikarios was. But Maira followed his smell and it didn’t tale her long to find the well. Irigony looked into it and saw the dead body of her father in its bottom. So much horror and grief she felt, that she ran towards her house, took a rope and hanged herself.
Dionysus as a god he was, he learned soon for their death. He went so mad that he drove the village’s girls crazy, and one after the other, they killed themselves like Irigony had.
To make the curse go away, the villagers made Ikarios and Irigony gods, and there was a celebration in their memory every year. But the gods, didn’t forget Maira. She is now shining every night in the sky as a constellation named ‘the dog*’.

*This is its name in Greek. It probably has a different name in England.

Until I translate the rest of the myths, here’s a challenge:
I’ll give you an epigram in greek. It’s not exactly from a myth, but it hides a story behind it. What are you supposed to do? Aw, nothing… Just, try and translate the epigram in English… (What? What did you think? That I would bear being the only one translating?)
Here it is:
Ω ξειν’ αγγελειν Λακεδεμονοίοις ότι δε τηδε κειμεθα τοις κεινων ρημασι πειθομενοι.

What are you waiting for? Aw, just give it a try! It’s not THAT hard!
Errr… Did I mention that it is ancient greek?
*frown* I still hate ancient greek…
Anyways… C’mon! It’s a great challenge! The one who solves it, gets a cookie!
On the other hand, if you can’t, I’m always here! Just don’t give up immediately…

Ummm..... Well I know that the first letter is Alpha or "A" but the rest is complete mystrey. Sorry! ^^;

Anyways, here's the story you wanted.

                                    The Princes in the Tower

When Edward IV died on 9 April, 1483, England was nearing the end of the tediously long conflict known as the Wars of the Roses. England needed a period of peace and stable government, but it was not going to get it.

Edward had two children, Edward, aged 12, and Richard, aged 9. The other player in the scene was Richard, Duke of Gloucester, Edward IV's younger brother and most able supporter and ally. Given the youth of the heir to the throne, a regency would be needed. The two most obvious people to head that regency were Queen Elizabeth and Richard of Gloucester.

Richard and the queen were openly hostile, however; indeed, there was very little public support for the queen. Edward IV certainly made his own wishes known, appointing his brother Richard as Lord Protector on his deathbed.

At the time of his his father's death, Edward V was in the company of his mother at Ludlow, so the queen's cause looked the brightest. But Richard, acting with the decisiveness and courage which marked most of his life, forestalled the queen. He rode quickly to intercept the royal party before they could reach London, and on 29 April, took Edward into his own custody. He arrested the lords Rivers and Grey, who were later executed. The queen took sanctuary at Westminster with her daughters, and her second son.

Within six weeks Richard gathered support for a move to declare the princes illegitimate and have himself named king. He arrested those lords most likely to oppose such a move, and had Lord Hastings executed. He pressured the queen into giving Richard, Duke of York, into his care, and
Richard joined his elder brother in the Tower of London.

It is worth remembering that the Tower of London did not at that time have the reputation it was later to acquire; it was a royal residence, an armoury, a protected place in royal hands. It was not first and foremost a prison. By placing the princes in the Tower of London, Richard was not, in theory, placing them in prison, or under arrest.

Richard then had a tame priest, Dr. Shaw, preach a sermon at Paul's Cross, claiming that Edward IV had been precontracted in marriage to another woman before marrying Elizabeth Woodville. Based on this 'evidence' Richard called an assembly which in due course asked him to take the crown as the only legitimate heir of the House of York. After a seemly show of reluctance Richard agreed and was crowned king.

Richard's claim to the throne was based on his assertion that the princes were illegitimate, because Edward had been betrothed before his marriage to Elizabeth Woodville, the prince's mother. Given the customs of the time, a prior betrothal could have invalidated Edward's subsequent marriage, so any children of that union would be illegitimate. Richard would have found it easy to gather support against the queen, for she was very unpopular.

At first glance it would appear that this claim is a feeble attempt to legitimise Richard's own claim to the throne. However, it is possible that Richard's claim is based on the truth, though not through Edward's betrothal vows. A Medieval historian Professor Michael Jones has determined through court records that Edward's legal father, Richard, Duke of York, was over 100 miles away from his mother, Lady Cecily, at the time when Edward must have been conceived. If true, this would mean that Edward IV was illegitimate, and had no claim to the throne.

Therefore his children, Edward and Richard, would have had no claim to the throne. In that case, the person with the best claim to the throne would be Richard, Duke of Gloucester, Edward's brother (or half-brother if the tale of Edward's origins were true). Certainly, tales of Edward's illegitimacy circulated at the time; Louis XI of France is known to have believed that Edward's father was an English archer named Blaybourne.

The princes were regularly seen playing on Tower Green, or taking the air within the walls, but then, around the beginning of June, 1483, they dropped out of sight. Rumours began to circulate, Were the two boys murdered under suspicous circumstances? One story says Richard the Third plotted the murder, while others say it was Henry Tudor (Who would become King Henry the eighth) who ordered the deed done. We simply don't know. Regardless, the elder boy was stabbed to death while his younger brother was suffocated with a pillow. Their bodies hidden--buried near the foundation of the White Tower.

On July 17th, 1674, some workers were dismantling the staircase of the White Tower for a reconstruction project, they discovered two small skeletons. An anonymous eyewitness wrote: "This day, I, standing by the opening, saw the workmen dig out of a stairway in the White Tower the bones of those two Princes who were foully murdered by Richard the Third. They were small bones of lads in their teens and there were pieces of rag and velvet about them." He then adds; "fully recognized to be the bones of those Princes."

The ghosts of the two Princes have been spotted in the Bloody Tower, wearing white nightgowns and holding hands. They never make a sound and can only be seen for a few fleeting moments before they fade into the stone work.

A retired Yeoman Warder retold his story about the Princes. He said he had lived in one of the quarters around the casements, which are in the outer circle of the Tower.

His story goes that he was fast asleep when his wife shaked him to wake up. She then asked him, "Who were those two children standing at the end of our bed?" Of course he woken up and saw nothing. The wife then went on to describe these children wearing long white nightgowns and looking distressed as they cuddled each other in front of a Victorian fireplace. However, there was no fireplace in the room so it was put down to a dream. Anyway, the couple moved out to somewhere else, and they started redecorating the quarter and found a false wall. Behind it was a Victorian fireplace.

Even though the skeletons were found, no one knows what happened in June, 1483 and what happened to the Princes.

"If there are going to be ghosts anywhere, They'd be at the Tower of London."

It is an epigram on a statue at the Hotgates in honour of Leonidas, his 300 spartians and the 700 I-don't-know-how-their-name-is-in-english-but-it-begins-with-a-''Th'' ^_^

Anyone ever heard of the Chupacabra...? ;3
It's a story passed down by many Spanish families, in particular.
My mom's Colombian so I was told the story as well.

El Chupacabra translates to "the goat sucker." Its first appearance was said to be in Puerto Rico, where it allegedly left many dead goats. All of the goats had been left fully intact but were completely drained of their blood.
The name was given for its preference of goats. However, it has also left many cows, chickens, turkeys, sheep and other livestock in the same state.

Witnesses have reported sightings all the way from Mexico to Russia, the Phillipines to the U.S.
Most people who have "seen" a Chupacabra claim that it is dog-like in appearance. Often times, alleged Chupacabras have turned out to be members of the canine family suffering from mange.
Other people say the Chupacabra is more reptile like... and some go as far as to say that it is a dog-reptile creature with bat wings that hops like a kangaroo.

No one can say for sure whether it exists. I, for one, don't believe in it. But, loving mythology and legend, I can't deny my interest in it.

One of the many representations of a Chupacabra: http://www.austinprobe.com/images/chupacabra.jpg
(Er, on a side note... I don't recommend that the easily frightened view that image. I know it nearly gave me nightmares when I first saw the image. X3 View at your own risk.)

I'm saying it again: EVERYTHING is welcomed if it's a myth.
