What could be a more suited topic for the controversy area, then the meaning of life? What do you think the meaning of life is, and why? And what is YOUR meaning of life?
Well the only meaning of life I think comes from a joke.
God managed to create the earth, sea, night and day and so on. So the next task was to build some animals.
So first, he made a dog. And he told the dog:
"Guard the holy temple and bark at any evil being who goes near it. For doing that, I shall you give you a life span of twenty years."
"Gee," The dog said. "I might get a really sore throat if I bark for twenty years. I'll tell you what. If I do the job, I'll give you ten years of my life span."
God agreed and so the deal was made.
Next he made a monkey. And he said to the monkey:
"Perform tricks and make everyone laugh. For doing that, I'll give you a life span of twenty years."
"Well I'd be pretty exhausted if I performed for that long." The monkey said. "If I give you ten years of my life span, then I'll do it."
So again, God agreed and it was done.
After that, he made the cow. And he told the cow:
"To suffer and graze on the grass under the hot burning sun and work to give milk to the farmers until you are slaughtered for your meat. For that, I shall give you a life span of sixty years."
"Well I don't know." The cow said. "I don't think I can keep it up for that long. I'll make a deal with you. If I give you forty years of my life span the I shall do it."
So God decided to grant that request to the cow and the deal was made.
Finally, God made man. And this is what he said to him.
"Eat, sleep and have fun. For that, I shall give you a life span of twenty years."
The man thought about it until he said to God:
"Hang on. I would have that long to live." He said. "I know! Why don't you give me the rest of the years you took off that dog, monkey and cow. And then I shall do it."
God thought about this for a while until he finally made his decision.
"Alright. I shall give you those years."
And so that's why:
We eat, sleep and have fun for the first twenty years.
We work for the next forty years.
We entertain our grandchildren and make them laugh for ten years.
We sit outside our houses and bark at anyone who even goes near it for the rest of the ten years.
And that I feel is the meaning of life. Not the true meaning but it is logical to a sense.
Well the grounds of that joke are highly controversial. The discussion between theists and atheists has raged on for over 100 years, not to mention between theists and other theists.
I don't really see that joke as controversial at all. Just a cute, funny little thing that put a smile on my face, regardless of whether or not I believe in God.
Also, the meaning of life is 42. Or was that the answer to life? I don't remember.
Space people: So what is the meaning of life? Computer: Well I have the answer, but I dont think youll like it. Space people: No, cmon Computer: 42 Space people: Wha?
It's my dad's favourite book, I love it too. My meaning of life is, play Runescape, constantly post on LUO, fall head over heals for Ollie Moor, draw 1000000000000 LU pictures per day and ponder why I exist. Yes, I do already know everything I learn at school! :) My formal answer is: Answer this very question.

The meaning of life? Who said life had to have a meaning? I'm being serious. Maybe there is not meaning to life, just life is there. (i do not believe this im playing devels advicot)
Or maybe the meaning of life is to find the meaning of life? I don't know i just believe life has some meaning to it, but we were never meant to find it out. Typical humans, always asking the wrong questions.

Well I dont really think theres a meaning to life either, its just humans using their sense of logic and reason on a universal scale.
But we're here now! And we have the ability of abstract thought, so we should definately make goals in life as to improve our exsistance. We already do that, but do we make the right ones?
Mine doesn't have a meaning. I just go with the flow whether I like it or not. And not everyone makes the right goals- my sister's goal was to get pregnant, marry that guy, and get away from my mom. Now she's stuck with 3 kids, a husband she doesn't really love anymore, STUCK WITH MY MOM, and she's unable to get a job because of her horrible work record. (Then again, if she'd act right, she could fix it...)

*shrug* Never thought of it that way... all my babies are kitt0rz. ^_^ 5, and I love em all. (And miss them- they're at my mom's house cause my grandma's allergic to cats. [Technically, so am I, but I got used to the cats and they went away.])

XD Yeah, my day's been like that too. O_o My days are always like that... I usually make at least one Spoonerism. I have examples on my site. *shameless advertising* Not like I get paid for it...

Mine are strange. Most of them are I forgot I graduated and went to school anyways (where Josh still goes) and he's usually in them, too. Samantha shows up once in a while. And the Mike Shinoda dream was pretty weird, too. He's 30-something! What the heck is he doing at my school? What am *I* doing at my school? I don't understand... heh, one time my sister dreamed she went to the grocery store, and cats were all up the street (they [formerly "we"] have 19), and I had been letting the cats out one by one. (The grocery store is like, 2 miles from where they live, so it's still plausible.)

Why do we exist? If we figure THAT out, we can answer the meaning of life. Maybe it's to be the ultimate destruction machine. If so, we're doing a good job.

Because, well, there's one thing, and he doesn't know why, but it doesn't even matter how hard he tries, but he just always fails 10th grade. Keep that in mind, because he designed this rhyme to explain it through time.

It depends on the person. I believe the meaning of life is different for each person and heavily depends on what they want to achieve in life. The meaning of life is never fully achieved for people keep setting new goals as soon as they finish meeting one.
That's great, I have my goals, and I know what to do to reach them, but I don't consider them my meaning of life, just a part that contributes to my yet to be decided big picture.
The meaning to life? Well... my opinion is there dosn't have to be a meaning. Sorry if that was a little too deep for you guys, I'm listening to really soft piano music right now... ^_^ but yeah, that's how I look at it.

There's a difference between "I don't think life has a meaning" and "there doesn't have to be a meaning" though. Kind of like the difference between atheism and agnosticism.
Basically saying that there doesn't have to be a meaning, but there very well could be, too. That is different than just saying "life doesn't have to have meaning" because, well, its self-explanatory.
Back to the atheist/agnostic analogy, the agnostic would say "God doesn't have to exist, but He very well could" while the Atheist would say "God doesn't exist."
So true, but if there is not a meaning of life, why does anything exist? Frada: know THAT'S deep.

Ok, what if, we were just something god wanted to do for a little bit and then he lost interest? That'd mean that there WAS a meaaning of life (which was to survive) but now nothing is worth anything anymore!

Yes! I've got it! The meaning of life is to set your OWN meaning of life and forfil it!

How about looking at things from a biological perspective?
*puts on dead serious face*
I honestly believe the meaning of life generally is to reproduce.
Whut?
I do. On a biological scale, we are born, we grow up, go through puberty, gain the ability to reproduce then sire children and pass on our genes to the next generation. It's natural instinct. It's what drives all living organisms on this planet; have sex, make babies, keep the population going. That's why our race continues. Something in our head says, 'sleep with someone', and although we as humans like to have sex for pleasure, we also know very well that that's where babies come from too. So perhaps it's not too much to assume that both drives for sexual interaction intermingle unknowingly?
Although homosexual people do contradict this theory. But it'd be an awful big generalisation to say that everbody wants to produce offspring. But then again, gay people do usually want to raise children as well. So perhaps the reproduction theory is still plausible.
But other than going on a biological perspective, I believe from a Christian perspective that God has put us upon the Earth to learn a lesson in our lifetime, and if we don't learn it in one lifetime, we'll learn it in the next, until we're wise and content beings that can continue peacefully within the afterlife. 8D
Whut? I can have more than one theory, can't I?
The meaning of life is to live, love and learn. We learn through living, we live through loving and we love through learning.
OMG! I'm a weirdo! *hides from bricks and stones that may break my bones*
c(X
*dashes off to write another unnecissarily long post in a different thread*

Continueing the species is definately our biological purpose in life.
Its also a necessarity for all mankind that we do so, but forget homo-sexuality in this context, its insignifigant. Homo-sexuality has been observed in over 800 other species then ourselves, so we know its not some unatural psychological human flaw.
Like you said homo-sexuals (Or just same-sex couples period), still want to raise kids as their own. According to all the research thats been done homo-sexuals make just as good parents as anyone else, and the kids turn out absoloutely fine. Unless of course they get bullied all the time for having two fathers or mothers, which isnt homo-sexualities fault.
Now, as nice as that God theory sounds, I'm going to have to say it goes completely against all christian theology. Christianity has nothing to do with reincarnation of any kind, and the bible never says you get two lives (Except maybe when referring to the afterlife).
Now, if you beleived in evolution, you could add to the theory that it is also our biological purpose to evolve. Which we do simply by reproducing.
I have a weird concept of Christianity. I take bits and pieces from other religions that I find comforting... My basic concept of Christianity in general is that if you come from a place of love in everything that you do, you're set.
And I believe the Bible to be a basic guidline for how one should live their life. I mean, honestly, how could Noah fit every single animal on Earth times two onto a ship?
Ah, but evolving is indeed an essential part of reproduction. The people we reproduce with have something to offer our offspring genetic-wise. Or they prove themselves to be a good provider. That's why animals and people are so picky with their partners. *nod*

Your concept of christianity is not christianity. You cannot take bits and peices of other religions and integrate them.
Thats whats called tea-leaves. Either your a christian, or your not a christian, theres no such thing as reincarnation in christianity.
In christianity if you donot repent and ask for the forgiveness of Jesus, you are not clean, and donot go to heaven.
Just a basic guideline? Thats not what the bible has to say...
1.) Why can't she integrate religions? There is no universal law of Christianity saying that you MUST believe Christianity in its FULL to be a Christian. You're taking her claim to Christianity too literally. She still believes in the Christian God, she just believes that God has a different plan for us than what most Christians would believe. It does not make her any less Christian, if she refers to herself as such. Catholics and Baptists, both branches of Christianity, believe in totally different things, for example.
2.) Again, you're taking everthing too literally. I think you can totally be a partial-Christian. It all depends on your point of view. What some baptist minister or some theologan might say is completely irrelevant; if you consider yourself a Christian because you believe in some parts of Christianity, and maybe a couple parts of other fath systems, then all the power to you.
3.) True, in the Bible that's what it would say. But some Christians *gasp* do not take the Bible at face value.
4.) The Bible cannot declare itself anything. It's all how people interpret it, and many Christians DO believe it is simply a guideline. Even the Preacher Mike Huckabee stated that he believes most of the Bible is just allegory; life lessons taught through stories. And he is a hardcore Baptist. So no, the Bible is never necessarily taken at face-value.
