What animal makes a good hero for a kid's book?

Two things I am writing a story at school and I've already chosen my heroine's species (she's a dragon)


But I thought about it and thought about what other  people whould choose for a protaganist.

I'll try to  go over as much of the animal kingdom as possible some genaric terms like bird, fish or feline will be used for simplicity.

So if you were writing a kid's book with an animal protaganist what would you coose?

I'd love to see an Australian creature... And I'm not saying this because I'm Australian... It's just that they're so quirky and unique...

And the uniqueness of our native mamals needs moar promotion. =3

I was tempted also to say a roadrunner but thats just my biasness towards roadrunners in general (not just Rev or anything).

Probably a member of the canine family... wolf or fox, most likely. 'Cause they're awesome.

However, an African jungle animal is also definitely the next best choice... =3
