Oh I might as well answer this.

OK so you have to solve ∫((4X^3 + 6X^2 + 4X + 7)*dx).

The ∫ symbol signifies integration.

Integration is a calculus term. You see, every equation has what's called a derivate, or what the slope of the equation when graphed derives from. When you have to integrate something, like shown, you have to find the integral of said equation. That is, in this problem 4X^3 + 6X^2 + 4X + 7 is the derivative, and you pretty much have the underivatize it.

The definitions are pretty hard to explain. The actual process of integrating the equation is a lot simpler.

See, when integrating a problem, there's a simple rule: "Add one, divide by it."

Here's what I mean.

Let's take the first variable of the equation: "4X^3". Now you follow the rule "add one, divide by it." You add 1 to the exponent, or the power, so it becomes 4X^4. Now you "divide by it" - that is, you divide the whole thing by 4, the exponent you just got. So that's 4X^4 / 4, which becomes X^4.

That's the first variable of the integral. Now let's look at the 2nd term in the original equation: "6X^2". Okay, Add one, divide by it. Add one: 6X^3. Alright, now divide by it. 6X^3 / 3, which equals 2X^3. And there's the 2nd term of your new equation.

Now 4X. That becomes 4X^2 (since 4X is basically 4X^1), then you divide it by 2, and get 2X^2.

7 is really easy. 7 can be rewritten as 7X^0. When you have X^0, the X disappears. However, add 1 to the 0 and you get 7X^1. And as I've said before, that's just 7X. Then you divide it by 1, which, again, is just 7X.


And then you add a C. ALWAYS add a C. There could be a constant in the equation you don't know about. When you derivatize an equation, the constants go away. So when you do it in reverse - AKA, integration - you have to assume there's a constant in the equation that just didn't materialize in the derivative. Well, long story short, add a C.

And thus you have

X^4 + 2X^3 + 2X^2 + 7X + C



It'll probably make more sense when/if you take Calculus. :-/

So that's how you knew that! You took Calculus.
