The end

I was watching NOVA ScienceNOW (it plays on PBS; and yes, I am crazy), and I learned something very disturbing:

In the year 2029, there is a 1 in 37 chance that a meteor named Aphophis will crash into Earth, ending 80% of all species on the planet. And do you know what day that meteor will hit?

April, Friday the 13th.

I don't even want to begin to wonder what might happen if that's true, or if it's not coincidence. If Apophis does not crash into Earth, it will pass dangerously close to us, closer even, than the satellites orbiting Earth. And if Apophis sails through the "keyhole" region of space, 13 years later, in the year 2032, Apophis will slam into southern California. If Apophis goes through the center of the keyhole, it will crash into the Pacific Ocean, wiping out practically everything along the Pacific coast.

Kinda scary of you think about it.

...Well, that totally put a damper on the rest of my day. TT_TT I really don't want to see what will happen if this is true/people find out. Utter chaos, it will be.

I wouldn't lose my head over this before I see a written article about it. There might be some other variables they didn't mention because it would lesson the dramatic effect.

So, let's try to be as cool about this as possible. And if it looks like I'm underestimating the situation, tell me.

Go to the PBS website and look around for NOVA ScienceNOW. They put up the short section of the episode that featured Apophis as a video clip.

I was just talking with my little brother (who knew he paid attention to science shows?) and he said (if what he heard was correct) we`ve already managed to redirect or destroy a cosmic body of some kind (forget if it was a meteor or something) by making direct contact with a missile. If that`s true, maybe, just maybe, we won`t need to worry about Aphophis, provided we have the firepower necessary to repel it and send it careening happily into deep, dark space.

Well, NASA did slam a probe into a comet to learn more about it, and they altered its orbit. So yeah, it might be possible to slam something into it to knock it off course....

But nuking it would be improbable. All of the pieces of Apophis would still be headed towards Earth, and there is a chance we would tear the space-time continuum or something, or knock a planet off its axis at the very least.

Shade, why do you want the world to end so badly? Even if you wish to die, you shouldn't take everyone else down with you (I wouldn't mind dying, but not the entire world!)?

If you'll excuse me, I have to talk to one of my friends about this....

Well I might not know alot about the comet thing but in a newspaper article (The Sun, 10th....I think) that the human race will end on the 31st October......(hears screams and sister panicking after I told her) Don't worry though, it won't happen for 2 and a half million years yet so no worries about that. However, after the human race is killed off by the next ice age, the spieces that will dominate the earth will be......Rats Thats right people, Rats.

Well, if it isn't that, maybe the supervolcano in Yellowstone or Ozone or comets or whatever, we are all going to die someday........I really look on the bright side of things don't I?

Awell, when it's our time to shuffle off to the big cloud in the sky, then it's our time. But we will not die until it is well.....our time, so really we can all look at how many ways we could die but really it's not that bigger deal (acordding to me) I mean we could worry all the time and when you finally choke it, you'll wonder what the big deal was in worrying.

But that's just me.

I say the human race will become extinct on Earth as soon as we figure out how to colonize other planets. Most everyone will then be boarding the next flight out, save for a few stubborn folks who refuse to move. Humans are like weeds. We reproduce and spread

I think there's been predictions about meteors heading for Earth before, but so far, well, we're all still here right? Science will always predict a chance of come celestial rock somewhere to crash into Earth, but i just don't see it happening for a very long time! I think what Martiangril said has some truth, as soon as humans find a way, we'll be heading off to live on other planets or aritficially constructed habitable stations or something in the distant future. But if the human race is gonna end, i think our own weapons of mass destruction or some contagious illness will wipe us out long before any meteor from outer space has a chance.

Say, what do you all suppose are the chances of radiation from a meteor collision mutating humans into super-powered beings? Okay stupid question, its more likely to kill most of us...or at least cripple us horribly...

Earth is bombarded by meteors all the time. They're just huge rocks/chunks of metal, so why would there be radiation?
Radiation is the emission of energy from the decay of atoms. The kind that people mostly think about, ionizing radiation, is the kind that is most likely to cause mutations. It involves photons which have enough energy to ionize atoms/molecules by removing electons. In order to get any radioactive results from a meteor, the meteor would have to be radioactive before it hit us, or it would need to hit a huge uranium deposit in the Earth.

I think we'd have a better chance of getting superpowers by sitting on a microwave

Unless, like is suggested in the original LU intro, that deposit in the Earth is an undiscovered substance/element ("unleashing supernatural forces"), whose properties are unknown.

*Sits on a microwave.*

Martiangirl said i'd have a better chance of getting super powers by sitting on a microwave! LOL!

But seriously, what are the chances that the Earth still hides, as yet, undiscovered properties and substances?

Who knows? That's why they're still undiscovered I guess. Maybe we should break out the shovels and start digging.

*sigh* Bradley, ou know very well I don't watch Pokémon.

PBS is a respectable broadcasting station. I see no reason to not believe them. Of course, meteor or not, we're all going to die anyway. It's just that, when the meteor hits, we'll all suffer more.

Why dismantle nukes when we can just send them off to space, with garbage to fuel the rocket, and blow up the asteroid...meteor...whatever...and then, it might be blown off course, at the very least!

Or we might turn it radioactive and if it ever does crash, we'll survive with superpowers.

Guys, we're more likely to die from our polluted planet then from an asteroid. Heck, maybe the astronauts are going to pull off something like in 'Armageddon' where they will blow up the asteroid. Humanity can improve their technology until 2028. So don't worry much about the asteroid.

I'd be more worried if these storms that are happening lately don't kill us, or if we all fry from global warming. I mean, TORNADOES ARE APPEARING IN EUROPE! THE OLD CONTINENT IS NOT KNOWN TO HAVE HURRICANES AND CYCLONES!

Sorry about this but I live in Europe, so naturally I'm much more concerned with that. That, and if the Turks get into the EU (now that'll cause quite a disturbance).

...it may or may not be true...but...

...my old social science teacher leads the FPS (Future Problem Solving) club I'm in, and she got a new scenario for us. Apparently, it concerned something (exactly) like this...

...but she said, "I dunno if they're kiddin' or not! (laugh)", so it might not be true...

...I just wanted to say
